William H. Sorrell is the Attorney General of Vermont. A native and resident of Burlington, Bill Sorrell graduated from the University of Notre Dame (A.B., 1970), Cornell Law School (J.D., 1974).  He served as Chittenden County Deputy State’s Attorney, 1975-1977; Chittenden County State’s Attorney, 1977-1978 and 1989-1992; engaged in private law in Burlington, 1978-1989, and served as Secretary of Administration under Governor Howard Dean from August 1992 until his appointment as Attorney General on May 1, 1997.  He has been re-elected to full terms starting in November 1998 through November, 2014.  In 2008, in gratitude for his service as board chair, the American Legacy Foundation endowed in his name an annual lecture on tobacco issues. In 2003, he received the prestigious Kelly-Wyman Award, presented annually to the nation’s outstanding Attorney General.  In addition to his service to the Legacy Foundation, he has served as president of the National Association of Attorneys General 2004-2005; on the Judicial Nominating Board; as president of United Cerebral Palsy of Vermont; as secretary of the Vermont Coalition of the Handicapped; as Burlington’s representative on the board of the Winooski Valley Park District and currently serves as chair of the Board of the NAAG Mission Foundation.  In 2009, the Vermont Medical Society recognized Bill as its "Citizen of the Year", in 2010, the National Humane Society recognized him for Humane Law Enforcement and in 2013, Vermont Law School awarded him an honorary Juris Doctor degree.
